Does the TikTok Algorithm Prefer Small Creators or Big Creators? A TikTok Creator Size Bias Study

Discover whether the TikTok algorithm favors small or big creators. Our study reveals how creator size impacts reach, virality, and views.

For years, creators have debated whether TikTok favors large accounts or gives everyone an equal chance. To answer that question, the teams at WayaFrame analyzed 3,012 random TikTok videos across three creator groups:

  • Micro: 0-10,000 followers
  • Mid: 10,000-100,000 followers
  • Macro: 100,000+ followers

The findings show that the answer isn’t simply “small” or “big.” The TikTok algorithm rewards each differently depending on the outcome you’re measuring.

Methodology

This study analyzed 3,012 TikTok videos to determine whether the platform’s recommendation algorithm systematically favors creators based on audience size. The objective was to measure both algorithmic reach relative to follower count and the likelihood of achieving major view milestones across different creator segments.

Research Design

The analysis compared creators across three audience tiers:

To ensure balanced comparisons, 1,004 videos were randomly sampled from each segment, resulting in a total dataset of 3,012 videos.

Data Collected

For every video in the dataset, the following information was recorded:

  • Creator follower count
  • Total video views
  • Video age (days since publication)
  • Original TikTok video URL for verification

This dataset allowed us to compare both relative performance and absolute reach across creator sizes.

Performance Metrics

The analysis focused on three key measurements.

1. Algorithmic Efficiency

To measure how much TikTok amplifies content beyond a creator’s existing audience, we calculated the Views-to-Followers Ratio:

Views-to-Followers Ratio = Total Video Views ÷ Creator Follower Count

A higher ratio indicates that a video reached significantly more people than the creator’s own audience, suggesting stronger algorithmic distribution. We call this algorithmic leverage.

2. Relative Viral Potential

We measured how frequently videos exceeded the creator’s follower count by large multiples, including 10x, 100x, 500x, and 1,000x. This metric identifies which creator segment has the greatest opportunity to dramatically outperform its audience size.

3. Absolute Reach

We also measured the percentage of videos reaching major view milestones:

  • 100,000+ views
  • 1 million+ views
  • 5 million+ views
  • 10 million+ views

Unlike the efficiency metric, these thresholds measure consistent large-scale reach regardless of follower count.

Data Preparation

Before the analysis, we standardized the dataset to ensure accurate comparisons.

  • Numeric values such as 1.2M and 850K were converted into raw integers.
  • Records with missing follower or view data were excluded.
  • Extremely high-performing videos were retained because they represent genuine viral outcomes rather than statistical errors.

Study Limitations

The findings should be interpreted within the scope of the dataset.

  • View counts were captured at a single point in time, so the complete lifecycle of each video’s performance was not measured.
  • The analysis focused on views and follower counts and did not include engagement signals such as likes, comments, shares, or watch time, which may also influence TikTok’s recommendation system.

Summary of Findings

The “Efficiency Bias”

We found that the TikTok algorithm exhibits a profound efficiency bias toward smaller creators while providing a Reach Floor for larger creators.

  • Micro-creators are the “lottery winners”: They achieve the highest relative reach, often hitting 377x their follower count.
  • Macro Creators are the “Consistent Performers”: They have a much higher probability of hitting absolute milestones (1M+ views) but with significantly less algorithmic leverage (only 5.6x their follower count).

Algorithmic Leverage (Views-to-Followers Ratio)

This metric measures how effectively the algorithm pushes content beyond a creator’s existing following. The table below summarizes what we found:

Key Insight: A micro-creator’s content is more efficient at reaching new audiences relative to their size than a macro-creator’s content.

Success Rate Probabilities

The probability of a single video hitting major view thresholds.

Viral Potential

The “1,000x Multiplier”

We analyzed the chance of a video reaching 1,000 times the creator’s follower count. Here’s what we found:

  • Micro Creators: 22.3% chance. (1 in 5 videos goes “Mega-Viral” relative to size).
  • Macro Creators: 0.2% chance. (Virtually impossible to hit 1,000x due to the sheer volume required).

Key Insights from the Study

If the goal is discoverability, TikTok favors small creators.

If the goal is consistent high-volume reach, TikTok favors large creators.

In other words, small accounts receive more algorithmic amplification relative to their audience size, while large accounts enjoy a much higher probability of reaching major view milestones.

Small Creators Receive More Algorithmic Boost

To measure how much the algorithm amplifies content, we compared median views against median follower counts.

This metric reveals how effectively TikTok pushes content beyond a creator’s existing audience.

A micro-creator generated 377 views for every follower, while macro-creators generated only 5.6 views per follower.

That means micro creators receive approximately 67 times more algorithmic leverage than macro creators.

What this means

TikTok does not appear to reserve exposure for established creators.

Instead, it aggressively tests content from smaller accounts, giving them a realistic opportunity to reach audiences far beyond their follower base.

This explains why relatively unknown creators can suddenly accumulate hundreds of thousands, or even millions, of views overnight.

Large Creators Win on Consistency

Although smaller creators receive stronger algorithmic leverage, larger creators dominate when it comes to consistently reaching major view thresholds.

Macro creators are substantially more likely to produce videos that cross one million, five million, or even ten million views.

Why this happens:

Large creators already have an engaged audience that provides immediate engagement signals after publishing.

Those early interactions give TikTok stronger confidence that the content deserves broader distribution, making it easier for larger accounts to sustain high performance.

Small Creators Have the Highest Viral Potential

One of the most interesting findings came from measuring the probability of a video reaching 1,000 times the creator’s follower count.

The results were dramatically different.

  • Micro creators: 22.3% chance
  • Macro creators: 0.2% chance

This means roughly one in five videos from micro-creators achieved extraordinary reach relative to the size of the account.

For large creators, achieving the same multiplier is almost impossible because the baseline audience is already so large.

This suggests that TikTok gives small creators far more opportunities to outperform their existing audience.

The Discovery Wall

Our study also revealed a point where many smaller creators struggle.

While 36.8% of micro creators reached one million views, only 8.5% progressed to five million views.

Large creators, by comparison, maintained a 40.3% success rate at five million views.

This indicates that smaller accounts can break into TikTok’s recommendation system relatively easily, but pushing beyond several million views becomes much harder without the engagement momentum that larger audiences provide.

What Brands Should Learn

The findings challenge one of influencer marketing’s biggest assumptions: bigger creators are not always the best investment.

The study compared two hypothetical campaigns with the same budget:

  • Hire one macro creator for $50,000.
  • Hire fifty micro-creators for $1,000 each.

Based on the observed success rates, the micro-creator strategy produced approximately 18 million total views, compared with around 5 million from a single macro creator.

That’s roughly 3.6 times more reach for the same marketing budget.

The data suggests that brands should evaluate creators based on average video performance and engagement rather than follower count alone.

What Creators Should Learn

The optimal strategy depends on your current stage.

If you’re a micro-creator

Your biggest advantage is discoverability.

Post consistently, experiment with more content ideas, and maximize your chances of benefiting from TikTok’s strong algorithmic amplification.

If you’re a macro-creator

Your advantage is consistency.

Focus on audience retention and maintaining engagement with your existing followers, since your reach increasingly depends on the strength of your established community rather than algorithmic boosts alone.

TikTok Creator Size Bias: Final Verdict

The study shows that TikTok does not universally favor either small or large creators.

Instead, it rewards different strengths at different stages.

  • For discovery and rapid growth, the algorithm favors small creators.
  • For consistent large-scale reach, the algorithm favors big creators.

Perhaps the biggest takeaway is that follower count is not the strongest predictor of success on TikTok. A creator with just a few thousand followers can still outperform an account hundreds of times larger if the content resonates with viewers.

That remains one of TikTok’s defining characteristics and one of the reasons it continues to be one of the most meritocratic social platforms for content discovery.
