How to Apply and Customize Transitions

Adding a between-clip transition

A between-clip transition plays where two adjacent clips meet on the same track.

Click to apply

  1. Select the two clips you want to transition between (or select one clip that has a neighbor on the same track).
  2. Open the Transitions tab in the left sidebar.
  3. Click a transition preset. The transition is applied at the boundary between the clips.

If you have a single clip selected, the transition is applied between that clip and its nearest neighbor.

Drag and drop

  1. Open the Transitions tab in the left sidebar.
  2. Drag a preset from the sidebar onto the timeline.
  3. Drop it at the boundary between two clips. A preview indicator shows where the transition will be placed as you drag.

The drop position determines the transition type:

  • Center of a clip boundary: applies as a between-clip transition.
  • Near the start of a clip (first 25%): applies as an intro transition.
  • Near the end of a clip (last 25%): applies as an outro transition.

Adding an edge transition

Intro transition

Drag a preset onto the beginning of a clip (the left edge area). The transition fades the clip in from the background.

Outro transition

Drag a preset onto the end of a clip (the right edge area). The transition fades the clip out to the background.

If a clip has no neighbors on either side, you can apply both an intro and an outro transition to the same clip.

Replacing a transition

To change an existing transition, apply a new one at the same position. The new preset replaces the previous one.

Timeline indicators

When a transition is applied, a visual indicator appears on the timeline:

  • Between-clip transitions: a badge at the seam between two clips showing the preset name and duration.
  • Intro transitions: a badge at the start of the clip.
  • Outro transitions: a badge at the end of the clip.

Hover over any indicator to see the full transition name and duration.

How between-clip transitions affect timing

When you add a between-clip transition, the two clips overlap briefly. The transition duration determines how much overlap there is. For example, a 400ms transition means both clips are visible simultaneously for 400ms as one fades out and the other fades in.

The maximum transition duration is limited to half the length of the shorter clip.

Transition settings

Select a clip with a transition to view and adjust its settings in the Transitions tab of the properties panel.

Incoming and outgoing

The panel shows transitions on both edges of the selected clip:

  • Incoming: the transition at the start of the clip (intro or from the previous clip).
  • Outgoing: the transition at the end of the clip (outro or to the next clip).

Each edge shows the transition name, type, and duration. You can adjust each edge independently.

Duration

Duration controls how long the transition takes to complete.

  • Range: 120ms to 2000ms.
  • Default: 400ms (varies by preset).
  • Controls: a slider and a numeric input field.
  • Reset: click the reset button to restore the preset's default duration.

For between-clip transitions, the maximum is capped at half the length of the shorter clip. For edge transitions, the maximum is the full clip length.

Easing

Easing controls the acceleration curve of the transition:

  • Ease In Out (default): starts slow, speeds up, then slows down. The most natural-feeling option.
  • Ease In: starts slow and accelerates.
  • Ease Out: starts fast and decelerates.
  • Linear: constant speed throughout.

The easing dropdown only appears for transitions that support it.

Direction

Some transitions support directional control:

  • Left, Right, Up, Down: sets which direction the transition moves.

For example, a slide transition can push content left while new content enters from the right. The direction dropdown only appears for transitions that support it.

Background color (edge transitions)

For intro and outro transitions, toggle Use background color:

  • On (default): the transition fades in from or out to the canvas background color.
  • Off: the transition holds the first frame (intro) or last frame (outro) instead.

This option is not available for between-clip transitions.

Removing a transition

Click Remove in the transition settings to delete the transition. You can also click the transition indicator directly on the timeline to remove it.

For between-clip transitions, removing clears both sides at once. For edge transitions, removing only affects the selected edge, leaving the other unchanged.
