Recording Your Screen, Camera, and Audio

Wayaframe includes a full recording studio built into the desktop app. Capture your screen, camera, or audio without leaving the editor. Recordings are automatically imported into your media library and can be added to the timeline immediately.

INFO

Recording is a desktop-only feature. It is not available in the web app.

Recording modes

The recorder supports three modes, selectable from the control bar:

  • Screen: capture your full screen, a custom region, or a specific window. Optionally include a webcam overlay for picture-in-picture recording. See How to Record Your Screen.
  • Camera: record from your webcam only, without capturing the screen.
  • Audio: record from your microphone and system audio without any video. See Recording Audio and Using the Teleprompter.

Opening the recorder

Open the recorder from the sidebar. A startup screen lets you choose your recording mode (Screen, Camera, or Audio) and select your devices before the control bar appears.

The control bar

The floating control bar is the main interface for all recording modes. It stays on screen during setup and recording, giving you access to:

  • Mode selector: switch between Screen, Camera, and Audio.
  • Record / Pause / Resume / Stop buttons.
  • Elapsed time display showing how long you have been recording (paused time excluded).
  • Camera dropdown: select your webcam device or mute it.
  • Microphone dropdown: select your mic device, adjust volume, or mute. A live activity indicator shows your input level.
  • System audio dropdown: select your system audio source or mute it. A level meter shows activity.
  • Settings button: open the recording settings window.
  • Teleprompter button: open the teleprompter window.

Recording settings

Click the Settings button on the control bar to open the recording settings window. Settings are saved and persist across sessions.

Video

  • Recording quality: 720p, 1080p (default), or 4K.
  • Frame rate: 24, 30 (default), or 60 fps.
  • Output format: MP4 (default), MOV, or WebM.

Recording behavior

  • Countdown: show a countdown before recording starts.
  • Show cursor: display the mouse cursor in the recording.
  • Highlight clicks: draw a colored ring around each mouse click. Customize the ring color, stroke width, and size.
  • Mouse click sound: play an audible click sound on each mouse click.
  • Hotkey tips: display keyboard shortcuts on screen as you press them during recording. Customize the position, style, size, color, and opacity. Filter to show only modifier shortcuts or all keys.

Camera

  • Camera recording mode: Picture-in-Picture (camera overlaid on screen), Side-by-Side (camera next to screen), or Camera Only.
  • Camera shape: circle or square.
  • Import camera clip: save the camera as a separate media file alongside the main recording.

Audio

  • Echo cancellation: reduce echo from speakers feeding back into the microphone (default: on).
  • Noise suppression: reduce background noise from the microphone input (default: on).

Shortcuts

  • Start / Stop recording: ++8 (default). Works globally, even when the app is in the background.
  • Pause / Resume recording: ++9 (default). Works globally.

Click the shortcut field and press a new key combination to customize, or click Clear to remove it.

Permissions (macOS)

On macOS, the settings window shows the permission status for screen recording, microphone, and camera access. If a permission is missing, click to open System Settings and grant it.

After recording

When you stop a recording, Wayaframe automatically imports the output into your media library. The recording appears as a media item with a recording source tag. From there you can:

  • Add it to the timeline at the playhead position.
  • Organize it in folders alongside your other media.
  • If Import camera clip is enabled, the camera footage is imported as a separate media item.

If you opened the recorder from the sidebar (outside a project), a new project is created automatically with the recording added to the timeline.
